Applying

Can I apply in person?

No, this year all applications will only be accepted online.

Can I pay my application fee with cash?

No, we are only accepting online payments. You may use any valid credit or debit card. If you do not have either, you may use a prepaid gift card.

I don't have a computer. Can I apply from my smartphone?

Yes, our online application is mobile-friendly.

I don't have access to a scanner and/or smartphone. How can I submit my documents and application?

You can go to your local library to access their scanners or you can use a dedicated mobile app paired with your smartphone camera (recommended) to photograph your documents and convert them to PDFs. Some free applications we recommend include*:

Can I get my application fee back if I didn't get accepted into the program?

No, the fee is 100% non-refundable.

How many people get accepted into the program each year?

We accept approximately 100-150 apprentices into the program based on merit and application completeness. To increase your chances of being considered, please read and follow all the application requirements carefully.

Do you take an unlimited number of applicants?

No. This year we will be limiting enrollment to 500 applicants. The enrollment period is set to close at midnight on January 28th; however, it will close immediately once 500 applications are submitted. We recommend completing your application as soon as possible.

I'm having issues with the online application. Who can I contact?

What does it mean when you ask for the closest location?

This helps us understand where our applicants are coming from. Your answer will not affect your eligibility. The locations and their addresses are:

Documentation

I can't get all my documents in time for the deadline. Can I have an extension?

Generally, no. However, should you have any difficulties obtaining documents, you may contact the apprenticeship office to discuss what options may be available to you BEFORE the deadline for submission. We cannot guarantee any extensions.

Who should I use as a reference for my application?

Reference letters could be from former employers, instructors, teachers, and acquaintances or family members in the field.

Can I use my reference letter from a former employer as proof of employment?

No, we can only accept W2’s, paystubs, or letters from former employers on their letterhead. Please refer to the application requirements on the general info page for more information.

Beyond the Application…

If accepted into the apprenticeship program, what does the time commitment look like?

Classroom and shop training consist of night classes as well as three 40-hour weeks of Blocked Training. As a 1st year Apprentice you will attend training 2 nights per week; every Monday night for classroom training and every Wednesday night for Labor History class, which includes the monthly Union Meeting. There will be 120 hours of hands-on training completed in three 40-hour blocks; fall, winter and spring.

How long does the apprenticeship program take?

The apprenticeship program lasts three years.

Where will my training be held?

We offer training in our Boston, Worcester, and Clinton, Maine locations. Your training location will be determined based on your current area of residence and the capacity available at nearby training centers.

What is expected of an apprentice accepted into the program?

  • Complete cooperation and willingness to learn

  • Regular school attendance

  • Dependability on the job

  • The ability to work as part of a team

  • The development of safe work habits

  • Perform a day’s work for a day’s pay

  • Be drug and alcohol free


When will I get paid?

Apprentices are paid on a weekly basis when working in the field. However, they do not receive wages for training time in school.


How much will I get paid?

As an apprentice, you will earn 60% of the Journeypersons hourly rate when working in the field. There is a 10% increase after the first 6 months and 5% increases every 6 months after that until you become a Journeyperson.


Will I always have work?

Today, ironworkers are in extremely high demand but we cannot guarantee constant work for everyone. The main factors that contribute to available work are weather and the economy, and of course your own personal drive.
